Mob Psycho Redesign

This was my second sound redesign, and I wanted to branch out and try a different medium to up my utility, so I chose one of my favorite anime, Mob Psycho. This one was a great challenge, my favorite part being creating the stretchy muscles and the massive impacts seen when the two beasts of men collide. I once again got creative, using objects like a massive Tupperware box to create some SFX. I also delved more into synthesis compared to my last redesign, which was fully Foley.

Creation of Rock Smash SFX

A Creative Approach

I wanted to see how creative I could get with the objects I used in this sound redesign. To accomplish this, I used objects to make sounds that weren't the norm. Tupperware boxes for impacts and smashing rocks...ice cubes for tremors and cracks in the Earth...I really wanted to be as experimental as possible! It helped me see things in new perspectives, and find unique ways to get something I was looking for sonically.

Capturing The Scene

As I was working on this project, I was given advice by a professor of mine that I really took to heart: "Try to capture the scene in essence rather than just the sound. What is happening that would change the profile?" This advice was one of the main reasons that I tried my best to capture the spirit of the context the two characters were in. Instead of having the sounds just be what you see on screen, I gave them synthesized undertones to represent the possession of the protagonist in the scene, Musashi (the man with the school uniform). My goal with this was to give hints to the viewer of the context, even if they hadn't seen the show.

Filling The Space

I wanted to capture as much as I could within the video, and didn't want to leave anything out at all, so the sonic profile didn't seem lacking or empty. To handle this issue, I dedicated myself to crafting as many SFX as I could for everything that was happening on screen, and some things even off-screen. The character's footsteps, their voices, the muscles stretching...I tried to account for as much as possible!

Conclusion

This project has been a culmination of everything I've learned so far through my audio career. Using multiple samples to layer and create depth...using creative objects to find the right sound profile...it all was used in this project to create it! I'm so excited to keep learning more so that I can improve further. There is no point in settling now! The sky is the limit!
